WHEN DO YOU NEED A MIGRATION?

A Joomla website may need to move for many different reasons.

Migration is not limited to copying files from one server to another. Hosting changes, PHP upgrades, domain changes and infrastructure problems can all require careful planning.

We review the current environment, prepare the target server and perform the transfer in a controlled way.

01

Hosting provider change

The current server is slow, unreliable, expensive or no longer suitable for Joomla.

02

PHP or database incompatibility

The website needs a newer environment, but the current hosting does not support it correctly.

03

Domain or brand change

The website must move to a new domain while preserving important URLs and search visibility.

04

Security or server incident

A compromised or unstable server requires a clean migration to a safer environment.

WHAT WE MIGRATE

More than files and a database

A professional Joomla migration includes the surrounding technical environment, not only the visible website.

01

Website files

Joomla core, templates, extensions, media, downloads and custom files are transferred.

02

Database

Content, users, menus, extension data and custom tables are migrated and verified.

03

Configuration

Paths, database access, cache, sessions and server-specific settings are updated.

04

Domain and DNS

A records, CNAME, MX, SPF and related records are reviewed when required.

05

SSL certificate

HTTPS is configured and checked on the target server before the final switch.

06

Email environment

Mail routing and DNS records are preserved when email remains on another service.

07

SEO URLs

Important routes, redirects and canonical behaviour are checked after migration.

08

Integrations

Payment, shipping, API, cron and third-party connections are tested on the new server.

CONTROLLED CUTOVER

DNS changes should be the final step, not the first.

The safest migration process prepares and tests the new server before the domain points to it. This allows us to verify the website privately and reduce downtime during launch.

When email remains with the previous provider, only the web-related records are changed. This avoids unnecessary mail interruption.

Target server prepared first
Temporary preview or hosts-file testing
SSL installed before DNS change
Mail records preserved where required
Low-TTL planning when possible
Post-cutover monitoring
DNS migration plan Controlled switch

www CNAME @ Preserved
mail MX Existing mail host Unchanged
SSL HTTPS Validated Ready
Website ready for DNS cutover
MIGRATION PROCESS

A planned transfer from assessment to final verification

01

Environment audit

Current hosting, Joomla, PHP, database, extensions, email and DNS are reviewed.

02

Target server preparation

PHP, database, SSL, directories and required server modules are configured.

03

Full backup

Files and database are copied before the transfer begins.

04

Website transfer

Files, database and configuration are moved and adjusted for the new environment.

05

Private testing

The site is tested before DNS changes wherever the hosting setup allows it.

06

DNS cutover

The domain is pointed to the new server with mail records preserved when necessary.

07

Final verification

HTTPS, frontend, administration, forms, cron jobs and integrations are checked.

08

Old server retention

The previous hosting can remain available temporarily as an additional safety measure.

MIGRATION SCENARIOS

Different moves require different technical planning

Hosting migration

Same domain, new server

The website moves to a new hosting provider while the public domain remains unchanged.

  • Server compatibility review
  • DNS A-record cutover
  • Email routing preservation
Domain migration

New domain and brand

The website moves to a new domain while preserving content and redirecting old URLs.

  • 301 redirect planning
  • Canonical and SEO review
  • Analytics and Search Console updates
Infrastructure migration

New PHP or database environment

The website is adapted to a modern server where old code may require compatibility fixes.

  • PHP compatibility work
  • Database strict-mode fixes
  • Extension and template testing
COMMON MIGRATION RISKS

Most migration problems are predictable and preventable.

Many failed migrations are caused by missing PHP extensions, incorrect paths, DNS mistakes, database incompatibility or incomplete file copies.

We test these areas before the final cutover instead of troubleshooting them after the domain is already live.

01

Wrong PHP version

The target server runs a PHP version that old extensions cannot handle.

02

Incomplete database import

Large databases time out or fail because of strict SQL rules or upload limits.

03

Broken file paths

Cache, log, tmp and storage paths still point to the old server.

04

Email interruption

MX and mail-related DNS records are accidentally replaced during the move.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Joomla migration questions

How much downtime is required?
Many migrations can be prepared and tested in advance, so the final downtime is limited to the last database sync and DNS cutover. The exact duration depends on the website and hosting setup.
Can email stay with the current provider?
Yes. The website and email do not have to use the same server. We preserve the existing MX and mail-related DNS records when only the website is moving.
Can you migrate a very large Joomla database?
Yes. Large databases can be imported through SSH or staged processes when phpMyAdmin upload and execution limits are too low.
Will SSL work immediately after the move?
We prepare and validate the certificate on the target server before or during the DNS switch, depending on the hosting environment.
Can you migrate to a new domain?
Yes. We can update Joomla configuration, internal links, canonical URLs and implement redirects from the old domain.
Can the migration be combined with a Joomla upgrade?
Yes. In many cases it is efficient to move the website to a new server and upgrade Joomla or PHP within the same project.
